Principal’s Blog – From Mardi Gras to Lent: A Journey of Faith

Dear Holy Family Catholic School Families and Friends,

This morning, our school community came together in the joyful spirit of Mardi Gras — “Fat Tuesday” — the final day of ordinary time before the sacred season of Lent begins. Rooted in our Catholic tradition, this celebration has long invited the faithful to feast and rejoice before entering the forty days of fasting, prayer, and repentance that prepare our hearts for Easter.

Beginning tomorrow on Ash Wednesday, Lent calls each of us to deeper conversion. As we trace the sign of the cross in ashes upon our foreheads, we are reminded of our call to “repent and believe in the Gospel” (Mark 1:15). Throughout this holy season, we will nurture our children in the three pillars of Lenten practice: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving — beautiful ways to grow closer to Christ and one another.

May this Lenten season be a time of spiritual renewal, reflection, and grace for every family in our community.

King Cakes and Mardi Gras Parade

A cherished highlight of today’s celebration was the King Cake. Whoever discovered the baby in their slice is considered blessed with good luck and named “King” for the day — and, here at HFCS, is invited to march in our Mardi Gras Parade! More than a delicious treat, the King Cake is a symbol of community — shared in classrooms, homes, and parishes alike — reminding us that we are one family in faith.

Our youngest Hawks led the way today with an absolutely delightful Mardi Gras parade — a beautiful witness to the joy that fills our school community! Each year this celebration grows more wonderful, and today was no exception.

A heartfelt thank you to Ashley Lake, Vita Bauer, and our incredible team of Room Moms who prepared King Cakes for every class and distributed beads throughout the school. We are deeply grateful to Mrs. Sather, the PIE organization, and all of our dedicated room parents who made this day truly extraordinary. Your generosity and spirit are a gift to our entire school family.

Hawks Athletics: Basketball Season is Underway!

Congratulations to our Hawks basketball teams on outstanding opening performances! Our girls’ team and B boys’ team celebrated a victory against The Oaks, and our boys’ team put on a tremendous showing as well. The energy and enthusiasm from our “Hawks Nest” have been truly inspiring. We look forward to a wonderful season ahead — go Hawks! Many thanks to our amazing volunteer coaches who lead the teams.

Faculty Safety Training

This past Friday, our entire HFCS faculty and staff, along with many of our safety and security volunteers, participated in an introductory workshop on the Standard Reunification Method. The training was led by Thomas Gandy, Director of Safety & Security for CDA Schools, alongside our SRO Officer Lee Morgan. We are grateful for their time and expertise in helping our school be well-prepared should an emergency ever arise in our community. The safety of your children is always our highest priority.
