Biography

Dr. Emily M. Gussenhoven is a native of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and a graduate of Sorensen Elementary, Lakes Middle School, and Lake City High School. She has studied and worked on both coasts and earned her B.A. in Chemistry from Mount Holyoke College, her M.S. in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Washington (Seattle), and her Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of California (Davis). She has taught undergraduate chemistry at the United States Naval Academy in Maryland, the United States Coast Guard
Academy in Connecticut, Old Dominion University in Virginia, and at Gonzaga University in Washington. She is currently the Elementary Science Instructor at Holy Family Catholic School, and has taught and/or volunteered at HFCS since August 2021.

“Dr. G” to some, or “Miss Emily” to others, has been married for 15 years to a naval officer. They are parents to a cocker spaniel and fifth-grade twins at Holy Family Catholic School. Emily has been a lifelong volunteer and adores traveling and supporting her family. The Gussenhoven/Roettgen Family attends Mass at St. Thomas and St. Pius Catholic Churches. They are involved with many local activities and programs that help youth in our community to develop good leadership, self-confidence, ethics, and scientific, artistic, and citizenship skills, including the Cub/Girl Scouts, Cd’A Parks and Recreation Athletics, and the Commissioning Committee for the USS Idaho. Since she was a young girl, Emily has loved learning about science, especially chemistry. It has been a pleasure for her to introduce young people to various aspects of science and has enjoyed watching her students progress with their experiments and learning.
